Rajasthan to Introduce MBBS in Hindi Language from 2024-2025 Academic Session

introduction of MBBS in Hindi

The Rajasthan government is set to introduce MBBS in Hindi language, joining the ranks of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh in making medical education accessible in Hindi. This move was announced on Hindi Diwas, September 14, and will be implemented in phases. Starting from the 2024-2025 academic session, two medical colleges in Rajasthan—Sampurnanand Medical College of Jodhpur and Medical College of Barmer, both affiliated with Marwar Medical University—will offer the MBBS course in Hindi alongside English.

This initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of promoting medical education in regional languages, a concept he advocated in 2022. The adoption of Hindi in MBBS programs is part of Rajasthan’s broader education policy and budget.

Optional Hindi for MBBS Students

The introduction of MBBS in Hindi will be optional for students, as confirmed by Gayatri Rathore, Principal Secretary of the Medical Education Department in Rajasthan. The government’s decision aims to make medical education more inclusive by offering Hindi as an alternative medium of instruction. This approach is expected to help students from Hindi-speaking backgrounds better grasp complex medical concepts.

Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh Set Precedents

Following in the footsteps of Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan is the latest state to embrace Hindi for medical education. In Chhattisgarh, Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai recently announced that MBBS courses would be offered in Hindi starting from the ongoing academic session. The first-year students will be provided with textbooks and study materials in Hindi, as the state works to fulfill the vision of promoting Hindi in professional education.

Sai emphasized that this decision is a part of the government’s effort to make education more accessible and student-friendly, particularly for those who may find learning in English challenging.

Impact of Introducing MBBS in Hindi

The decision to introduce MBBS in Hindi language is seen as a significant step toward regional language empowerment in education. It allows students to pursue their dreams of becoming medical professionals without the barrier of language. By offering MBBS in Hindi, states like Rajasthan are enhancing the inclusivity of medical education, particularly for students from rural and Hindi-speaking areas.
