Aramco Warns of Catastrophic Consequences for Global Oil Markets Amid Strait of Hormuz Disruptions

In a strategic move to optimize shareholder value, Aramco announced a 3 billion dollar share buyback program, marking the first such initiative in its corporate history. Additionally, the company is dealing with localized infrastructural threats. Nasser confirmed that a recent drone strike caused a limited fire at the Ras Tanura Refinery, the company’s largest refining facility. While the fire was quickly contained and the facility is in the process of restarting operations, the incident underscores the intense operational risks facing energy producers in the region.

Aramco is reportedly considering the diversion of additional crude cargoes to Yanbu, a port located on the Red Sea coast outside the immediate threat zone of the Gulf. By utilizing a cross country pipeline network capable of transporting up to 5 million barrels per day, the company aims to bypass the Hormuz chokepoint. However, pipeline capacities are inherently limited and cannot fully absorb the massive volume of oil traditionally shipped through the strait.
