If a machine can answer questions, solve issues and hold conversations like human beings, does that really mean that it actually thinks? This question has recently sparked a widespread attention among everyone and gained significant importance due to the widespread overuse of artificial intelligence across various industries. Artificial Intelligence is a technology that enables machines and computer systems to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence. These tasks include learning from data, solving problems, recognizing patterns, and making decisions.
Artificial Intelligence does not have a mind or consciousness. Instead, it works based on data, logic, and programmed learning models. AI systems analyse information and respond based on what they have learned from previous examples.
In simple words, Artificial Intelligence imitates intelligent behaviour, but it does not possess real understanding in the same way humans do.
Understanding Intelligence
Intelligence has been defined in many ways: the capacity for abstraction, logic, understanding, self-awareness, learning, reasoning, planning, creativity, critical thinking and problem solving. It can be described as the ability to perceive or infer information and to retain it as knowledge to be applied to adaptive behaviours within an environment or context.
Human intelligence is the mental quality that allows people to learn from experience, adapt to new situations, understand abstract ideas, and use knowledge to change their environment. It blends cognitive skills, self-awareness, and emotions.
Whereas Artificial Intelligence is computer technology that lets machines copy human skills like learning, problem-solving, and making choices. Instead of following strict human code for every single step, AI uses big sets of data and smart math rules called algorithms to spot patterns and complete tasks on its own.
However, comparing Artificial Intelligence to human intelligence is not a simple contest. Human intelligence is natural, adaptive, and driven by consciousness and emotions. Artificial Intelligence is machine-made, data-driven, and relies on algorithms to process information. Neither is universally better, AI wins at speed, scale, and repetition, while humans excel at empathy, creativity, and complex ethical judgment.
Can AI Reason Like Humans?
Now when it comes to reasoning AI is still far behind humans when it comes to give a practical and logical reasoning as per the situation. As AI gives reasons on the basis of patterns in it’s training data, statistical probabilities, mathematical rules and all the amount of information it has learned from several sources and the situations it has encountered before. It cannot truly reason like a human today.
Humans have deep real world experience, emotional intuition and flexible common sense that algorithms simply do not have. AI lacks the real world intuition and physical presence, which humans naturally develop through their interaction with the surroundings which makes them a lot better than AI in such situations.
The Mystery Of Consciousness
The biggest difference is consciousness. Consciousness typically means the state of being aware of your own thoughts, feelings, sensations and surroundings. It is a subjective experience of life. A person becomes conscious of something when they feel or sense something. Like for example a person feels pain when they are hurt, they are not given any information that there is pain, they feel it as there is a sense of feeling in humans.
Whereas AI cannot feel anything or sense any emotion, it gives statements like ‘it was very sad to hear that’ when you tell any type of sad story to it. But do the machine actually feels sad or experience pain? The answer is NO because it is not possible for a machine to feel anything or experience anything in the real world that the humans do.
Can AI Ever Become Conscious?
The possibility of AI becoming conscious still remains an unanswered question. As of now there is no proof that AI can ever become conscious, but many people still believe that later in future some new advanced technology might develop and make AI conscious. They believe that the machines are getting better day by day so at some point of time maybe machines can become capable of learning, reasoning and interacting with the world.
On the other hand some people believe that the consciousness depends on the biological processes which human beings go through. So it is not possible for AI to ever become conscious.
Conclusion
Artificial Intelligence has made remarkable advancements in recent years and continues to develop rapidly. AI can perform multiple tasks, it can easily solve complex problems, recognize patterns, communicate in several languages and perform many more intelligent tasks. However, by just performing intelligent tasks does not prove that machines can actually think in the same way as human beings do.
The major gap lies there in consciousness. Artificial Intelligence can provide some level of logical reasoning, although it is not accurate and precise as human beings do, however they still do it and when it comes to consciousness, AI has zero consciousness and that’s where the major gap is. Therefore, the question of whether AI can truly think like human beings doesn’t have a simple answer. In the future AI may become capable of behaving like human beings but behaviour alone cannot prove the existence of consciousness or the ability to give reasoning like humans. The real challenge is not just to make machines that think like humans, but to understand what exactly human thinking and human mindset are which is very complex. Human thinking is not something that can simply be programmed into a machine, it is a natural ability that humans develop.
At the end of the day the fact that AI was created by human beings, it is a creation of human hands and minds. So no matter how advance it becomes, it will always remain a creation of human beings and the creation can never truly surpass it’s creator.
