A viral video showing a person pulling out what appeared to be “thermocol” from a concrete barrier on the Delhi-Katra Expressway sparked widespread discussion on social media. Many users questioned the quality of construction, claiming that the barrier had been filled with thermocol instead of concrete. As the video gained traction, concerns were raised about the durability and safety of the expressway project, one of India’s major highway infrastructure developments.

The controversy prompted a response from the government, with officials explaining that the material visible in the video was not evidence of poor construction but a standard engineering component used in highway expansion joints. The clarification shifted the conversation from allegations of faulty construction to a discussion about modern road engineering practices and the materials commonly used in large infrastructure projects.

Government Explains Why Expanded Polystyrene Is Used

Senior Advisor to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Kanchan Gupta, responded to the viral claims by explaining that the material identified by many as “thermocol” is technically Expanded Polystyrene (EPS). According to him, EPS is widely used in civil engineering and infrastructure projects across the world, particularly in expansion joints that allow concrete structures to safely expand and contract due to changing temperatures.

Concrete naturally expands during hot weather and contracts during cooler conditions. If sufficient space is not provided to accommodate this movement, cracks may develop in the structure over time. Expansion joints are therefore intentionally incorporated into bridges, highways, flyovers, and concrete barriers to absorb this movement and reduce stress on the structure.

The EPS blocks placed inside these joints are not intended to provide structural strength. Instead, they serve as compressible fillers that allow movement while preventing debris and unwanted materials from entering the expansion gap. Officials emphasized that the presence of EPS in these locations should not be mistaken for the primary construction material used in the barrier itself.

Understanding the Role of Expansion Joints in Highway Construction

Expansion joints are an essential part of modern infrastructure engineering. They are designed to manage thermal expansion, contraction, vibrations, and minor structural movements that naturally occur throughout the lifespan of highways and bridges.

Without these joints, continuous concrete sections could experience excessive stress, leading to premature cracking or structural damage. Engineers therefore leave calculated gaps between sections and fill them with specialized materials that can compress and recover as temperatures change.

Expanded Polystyrene is one of several materials commonly selected because it is lightweight, moisture resistant, chemically stable, and capable of absorbing movement without transferring excessive force to surrounding concrete. Its use is determined during the design stage and follows engineering specifications rather than cost-cutting measures.

Experts note that seeing EPS exposed in a damaged or open expansion joint does not necessarily indicate poor construction. Instead, it may simply reveal a component that is normally concealed beneath protective finishing materials.

The government has urged the public to distinguish between structural concrete and engineered expansion joint materials before drawing conclusions about construction quality.

The incident highlights how short video clips can quickly influence public perception without providing complete technical context. Infrastructure projects often involve specialized materials unfamiliar to the general public, making them vulnerable to misunderstanding when isolated visuals are shared online.

While public scrutiny of government projects remains important, engineers stress that technical evaluations should consider design specifications, construction standards, inspection reports, and structural performance rather than relying solely on viral videos.

Experts believe that improved public awareness about engineering practices can help reduce misinformation and encourage more informed discussions around infrastructure development. They also emphasize the importance of official clarifications whenever technical issues become subjects of widespread online debate.

The Delhi-Katra Expressway remains one of India’s significant road connectivity projects aimed at improving travel efficiency and boosting regional economic growth. Large-scale expressways incorporate numerous engineering solutions—including drainage systems, reinforcement techniques, bearings, sealants, and expansion joints—that may appear unusual to non-specialists but are standard components in modern highway construction.

As infrastructure projects become increasingly visible on social media, experts expect similar debates to continue. They recommend verifying claims through credible engineering sources and official statements before forming conclusions about construction quality.
