The Economic Impact of Generative AI on Global Productivity:

We are living in a time when technology is changing faster than ever, and one of the biggest reasons for this is Generative AI. AI Tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and other AI models are not just helping students with home assignments , making interactive images or such petty shortcuts to hardwork, they are actually changing the way the whole world functions and earns money. This is why economists today are talking so much about the impact of Generative AI on global productivity .

What is Generative AI?

In simple words, Generative AI is a type of artificial intelligence that can create new content text, images, codes, music, and even videos instead of just analysing existing data. Earlier, computers could only follow fixed instructions, but now AI can “think” and produce original results based on what it has learnt almost like a human brain.

How It Boosts Productivity-
Productivity basically means how much work or output we can produce with the resources we have, like time, money, and labour. Generative AI increases productivity in many ways:

  1. Faster Work : – A task that used to take hours, like writing a report or making a presentation, can now be done in minutes with AI help.
  2. Cost Reduction : – Companies and organzations save money because AI can do repetitive jobs like answering customer queries, checking documents, or writing basic codes, and so on without human interface.
  3. Better Decision Making : – Businesses use AI to study large amounts of data quickly, make smarter and foolproof decisions
  4. New Job Opportunities : – While some old jobs may reduce, new jobs like “AI trainers,” “prompt engineers,” and “AI ethics experts” are being created.

According to many global reports, including studies by McKinsey and Goldman Sachs, Generative AI could add trillions of dollars to the world economy in the coming years by making industries like IT, healthcare, education, finance and even design industry much more efficient.

However there are some challenges as well. As every great thing comes with some problems too. Generative AI also brings:
Job Losses : – Some workers, especially in data entry or basic writing jobs, may lose employment and are already so.

Skill Gap : – Not everyone knows how to use AI tools properly, which can increase inequality between countries or people.

Wrong Information : – Sometimes AI gives incorrect or biased answers, which can affect important decisions.

High Cost of Technology : – Building and running AI systems needs huge investment, which smaller countries or companies may not afford easily. Especially at the onset.

Now lets see where India stands.
India, being a country with a huge IT and service sector, has a big chance to benefit from Generative AI. Many Indian startups and companies are already using AI to improve efficiency in banking, education, corporate, health care and agricultural sectors .

Generative AI is like a powerful tool that can either build a stronger, faster economy or create new problems if not used carefully. Just like a hammer can build a house or break it down, it all depends on how wisely humans use this technology. As future citizens and workers, we as students should aim to use AI responsibly so that it helps in the true progress of the global economy.
