Sustainable design: Are we really designing for the future ?

Sustainability is everywhere in modern design, from glass skyscrapers with plants to green products. Architects, brands, and governments all say they are building a better future. But are we truly designing for the future, or just making things look sustainable?
Design has always shaped how we live. Buildings affect our behavior, cities shape our lives, and products influence how much waste we produce. With climate change, pollution, and resource shortages becoming bigger problems, sustainable design is now a must. Real sustainability is more than just adding solar panels or using recycled materials. Designers need to think long-term about people, the planet, and making things accessible.
The core idea of sustainable development is to meet present needs without harming future generations’ ability to meet theirs. Yet, modern sustainable design often falls short, prioritizing visual appeal over true impact. Many buildings are labeled green for some eco-friendly features, but still consume large amounts of energy during construction. This greenwashing fosters a false sense of sustainability, obscuring genuine progress.
As someone interested in architecture, I have noticed that many modern structures focus heavily on looking futuristic rather than functioning responsibly. A building is not truly sustainable if it ignores local climate conditions, produces excessive waste, or becomes unusable within a few decades.
Good sustainable design should respond to its environment rather than fight against it. Traditional architecture in many countries already followed this principle long before sustainability became a global trend. For example, homes in hotter regions used courtyards, shaded spaces, and natural ventilation to remain cool without depending heavily on electricity. Today, many modern buildings rely entirely on air conditioning and artificial systems, increasing energy consumption. Sometimes, the future of design may actually lie in learning from the past.
Another essential part of designing for the future is inclusivity. A city cannot be considered sustainable if it only works for certain groups of people. Accessibility is deeply connected to sustainability because spaces designed for everyone tend to serve communities better and remain useful for longer. Features such as ramps, tactile pathways, elevators, and inclusive public spaces are not “extra additions”; they are necessary elements of thoughtful design. Future architecture should not only protect the environment but also improve the quality of life for all individuals, including people with disabilities.
Ultimately, sustainable design is not about creating perfect buildings or following aesthetic trends. It is about creating spaces and systems that can adapt, endure, and support future generations. The real challenge is not making something look futuristic, but making sure it continues to work meaningfully and responsibly for the future.
