Can the Way Your Room Looks Actually Affect Your Mood?

Imagine starting your day in two different rooms, one filled with natural light and neatly arranged belongings, and another dark and cluttered with items scattered everywhere. Even before you start you day, you would be reacting differently to each space. This is because our brains naturally form emotional responses to the environments we spend time in, making the appearance of a room more influential than we realize.
Human beings have a tendency of letting our surroundings affect our daily lives and the choices we make. It lets us perform our tasks and shape the way we think, gradually letting us form habits that stick around for much longer than we expect. From the paint that our walls have been covered in, to the cluttered desk or a perfectly made bed, every one of those things affect our productivity, well-being and health. We spend a lot of our time indoors, hence understanding the crucial effect between the environment and emotions becomes increasingly important and a necessity.
Colours play an important role in our lives and can instantly change a person’s mood for the better or worse. Similarly, colour is one of the most influential elements in a room. Cool tones such as blues, greens, and purples can make a room feel calm, spacious, as well as relaxing, while warm tones such as reds, yellows, and oranges help to create a sense of comfort, energy, and coziness. Apart from colour, the level of organization in a room also affects how we feel. A clean and organized room can make a person feel more in control and motivated, whereas a messy room may increase stress and procrastination, and negatively impact overall well-being.
Another factor that can influence a person’s mood is the presence of nature within a room. Elements such as indoor plants, fresh flowers, natural materials or even a view of greenery outside a window can create a refreshing environment. Humans have an in-build connection with nature and being surrounded by natural elements can help reduce stress, improve concentration, and promote a sense of well-being. Therefore, many modern architects and designers incorporate nature into indoor spaces to create healthier and more enjoyable environments.
Therefore, the spaces that we choose to live in are not mere backdrops of our lives, instead they influence our emotions, behaviors, and choices. Every design decision, from the colours on the walls to the amount of natural light and greenery in a room, each element strongly contribute to how we experience a space. As our surroundings shape us in subtle yet powerful ways, creating environments which become essential for both our mental well-being and everyday happiness.
