WHAT IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the branch of computer science, which makes the computers to mimic the human behaviour to assist humans for better performance in the field of science and technology. Replicating human intelligence, solving knowledge-intensive tasks, building machines, which can perform tasks, that require human intelligence, creating some system which can learn by itself are the few specific goals of AI. Machine learning and deep learning are two subsets of AI which are used to solve problems using high performance algorithms and multilayer neural networks, respectively. With the help of machine learning process, structured data like genetic data, electrophysical data, and imaging data are properly investigated in medical diagnosis. AI provides advanced devices, advanced drug designing techniques, tele-treatment, physician–patient communication using Chatbots and intelligent machines used for analysing the cause and the chances of occurrence of any disease in the field of healthcare.
CAN AI REPLACE HUMAN DECISION MAKING?
AI has started to pave the way for many industries to shorten processes of optimizing workflows, generating text and images, and making decisions for us. AI predicts outcomes based on inputs provided by humans and then humans make decisions based on these predictions. This interaction is prevalent in various circumstances, from generating content for social media to assisting in customer service. However, the critical question remains: what happens when AI begins to make decisions and judgements autonomously?
The transition from AI making predictions to AI making judgments is not just a technological leap but a profound shift in responsibility. For instance, when we use AI for generating LinkedIn posts, we provide feedback to refine the content until it meets our expectations. This process ensures human oversight and control over the final output. But what happens when the stakes are higher and the decisions have more significant consequences? We cannot always rely on AI on these circumstances .It is clearly someone who relies on our judgment and review and cannot have its own ability to perform tasks. Despite AI’s predictive capabilities, the irreplaceable role of human judgment becomes evident, particularly in contexts requiring ethical reasoning. As we look to the future, striking a balance between AI’s predictive power and its ability to make morally sound judgments emerges as crucial. This journey into the ethical landscape of AI demands collaboration among technologists, ethicists and society at large to ensure responsible deployment and uphold shared values in AI decision-making processes.
We cannot always trust the outcome of AI. AI might have better answers because of the algorithm it works on but when provided with ethical reasoning questions fail to require a better judgement than a human. Another concern is accountability When an AI system makes a harmful decision, it is often unclear who should be held responsible: the developers, the organization using the system, or the AI itself. This makes human oversight essential, especially in high-stakes areas such as healthcare, law enforcement, and public policy. AI systems rely on the data they are trained on. If the data is incomplete, biased, or outdated, the decisions AI produces may also be flawed. Unlike humans, AI lacks emotions, empathy, moral judgment, and the ability to fully understand complex social and cultural contexts. For example, a judge deciding a legal case or a doctor discussing treatment options with a patient must consider fairness, compassion, and individual circumstances—qualities that AI cannot genuinely possess. AI cannot be given the power to make decisions without a human reviewing them as AI will always lack the decision making of a human. In other words, AI is a powerful support tool to human judgement.
IN CONCLUSION,
AI might have better answers, algorithms but lacks the judgment which a human can make. AI cannot fully be dependent on as it lacks the qualities of a human. AI has evolved the way decisions are made but cannot ever fully replace human decision making. I think the best way to look at this is not to see the difference between AI and humans but to combine the strengths of both. As a student who supports AI, I strongly believe that AI can support people in making more fairer, better and more informed decisions creating a future where technology enhances human potential rather than replacing it.
