In a significant development, NEET-UG 2024 re-exam the Centre informed the Supreme Court on Thursday that the grace marks awarded to 1,563 students who appeared for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Undergraduate 2024 (NEET-UG 2024) will be cancelled. These students will now have the option to reappear for the exam. This decision follows deliberations and recommendations by a subsequent committee, and the court has scheduled the re-exam for June 23.
Supreme Court’s Decision that NEET-UG 2024 re-exam
The Supreme Court, represented by the Vacation Bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta, announced that the scorecards of these 1,563 candidates will be cancelled and withdrawn. The re-exam results are expected to be released before June 30, ensuring that the counselling process scheduled for July 6 proceeds without delay. The court clarified that for students opting not to retake the exam, their results will reflect their actual marks without the previously awarded grace marks. Justice Nath stated, “For those who appear for re-test, the May 5 scores will be discarded.”
Government and NTA’s Response
The National Testing Agency (NTA) notified the retest on Thursday, confirming the June 23 date. Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan emphasized the seriousness with which the government is handling the issue, assuring action against those responsible for the NEET results discrepancies. “The government had put forward its stand before the SC today. It’s about 1,500 students. The government is taking this issue seriously,” Pradhan said.
Concerns and Trust Issues
Alakh Pandey, CEO of Physics Wallah and petitioner in the case, expressed concerns over the NTA’s handling of the NEET results, highlighting a trust issue. “NTA accepted in front of the Supreme Court that the grace marks given to the students were wrong. This created dissatisfaction among the students. The re-examination of those 1,563 students who got grace marks will be done on 23rd June, or the original score without grace marks would be accepted by the students. The question is if the NTA has other discrepancies that we are unaware of,” Pandey remarked.
Background and Future Actions
This decision follows a notice issued by the Supreme Court on June 11 in response to a plea from ten NEET candidates, who demanded a retest due to suspected paper leaks and irregularities. The NTA, constituted based on a past Supreme Court order, faces scrutiny as the court continues hearings on the broader issues of NEET exam integrity.
