US Education Crisis Deepens: Reading, Math Slump & AI Promise

The United States is grappling with a deepening education crisis: reading, mathematics and science scores for high school and middle school students have plunged to historic lows, prompting calls for sweeping reforms and new investments — especially in AI-enabled tools — to reverse the slide and better prepare students for a changing global workforce.

Recent data from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), also known as the “Nation’s Report Card,” reveals alarming declines. Only 35% of U.S. twelfth-graders are now proficient in reading, while mathematics performance has dropped to just 22%, the lowest in decades. Science scores for eighth graders are similarly poor.

                •             Targeted investments in under-resourced districts, with a focus on minority serving institutions and early grade levels, could yield long-term gains.

                •             Federal vs state control debates will shape policy. Given diversity in performance by region, state leadership is increasingly being called upon to tailor strategies locally. Federal guidelines, grants, and reform incentives will factor into how swiftly changes are adopted.
