The Psychology Behind Habits and How to Change Them

Introduction

Every morning, most of us wake up and follow the same routine almost automatically. We brush our teeth, check our phones, eat breakfast, and begin our day without thinking much about it. These actions feel natural and effortless. However, when we try to change even a small habit—like waking up earlier, studying without distractions, or reducing screen time—it suddenly feels extremely difficult.

This common struggle highlights something fascinating studied in Psychology: the science of habits. Understanding how habits form and how they can be changed helps us take control of our daily behavior and personal growth.

What Are Habits in Psychology?

In psychology, habits are behaviors our brain learns through repetition. When we repeat an action many times, the brain creates a mental shortcut, allowing us to perform the action automatically without conscious effort.

This process helps the brain save energy because it naturally prefers efficiency. Over time, repeated behaviors become automatic patterns that guide our daily routines.

Psychologists often explain habits using a model known as the Habit Loop, which consists of three parts:

  • Cue: A trigger that starts the behavior
  • Routine: The action or behavior itself
  • Reward: The benefit or satisfaction received afterward

This cycle reinforces the habit and makes it easier for the brain to repeat it in the future.

Example of a Habit in Daily Life

A simple example can be seen in sports and physical activity. I personally enjoy playing Field Hockey. After a long day of classes, I often feel mentally tired or restless. That feeling acts as the cue.

Instead of staying idle, I pick up my hockey stick and go to the field to play with my teammates. The routine is practicing, running across the field, and enjoying the game.

The reward is the sense of energy, happiness, and relaxation that follows. Because the experience feels positive, my brain naturally encourages me to repeat the activity. Over time, playing hockey has become a daily habit.

Why Habits Shape Our Lives

Habits influence our lives more than we often realize. When a behavior consistently produces a positive reward, the brain begins to repeat it automatically. This is why both good and bad habits can become deeply rooted.

The challenge arises when we want to change habits that are not helpful. Changing a habit means altering a pattern that the brain has practiced many times. Because of this, breaking old habits can feel uncomfortable or difficult.

However, psychology also provides powerful strategies to help change behavior.

How to Change a Habit

One of the most effective techniques suggested by psychologists is to keep the same cue and reward but change the routine.

For example:

  • Cue: Feeling stressed after studying
  • Old Routine: Scrolling endlessly on social media
  • Reward: Temporary relaxation

Instead of using the phone, a healthier routine could be:

  • Going for a short run
  • Playing a sport
  • Talking with a friend
  • Listening to music

The brain still receives the reward of relaxation, but through a healthier action. Over time, the new behavior can replace the old habit.

Why Understanding Habits Matters

As someone who is sixteen and interested in studying psychology in the future, I find the science of habits incredibly fascinating. Habits reveal how small daily patterns quietly influence our decisions, productivity, and lifestyle.

Understanding habits does more than explain behavior—it shows that with awareness, patience, and practice, we can reshape our routines and improve our lives.

Perhaps the most powerful idea psychology teaches us is this:

Our habits may shape who we are today, but we also have the power to reshape our habits for tomorrow.
