Salim Khan Health Update: Veteran Screenwriter on Ventilator After Brain Haemorrhage

Veteran Bollywood screenwriter Salim Khan, a towering figure in Hindi cinema and the father of superstar Salman Khan, is currently receiving critical medical care after being hospitalised in Mumbai following a health scare. The 90-year-old legend was admitted to Lilavati Hospital on Tuesday morning after suffering a minor brain haemorrhage, medical sources confirmed.

According to the treating team, led by Dr Jalil Parkar, Salim Khan underwent a stabilising medical procedure early on Wednesday. While at the time of reporting he remains on a ventilator, doctors described his condition as stable and under close observation. They expressed cautious optimism that he may be taken off ventilator support by tomorrow, underscoring that age-related recovery processes can be slow but are progressing within expected medical parameters.

“We are hopeful that by tomorrow we can remove him from the ventilator,” Dr Parkar told reporters, highlighting that the initial procedure had been successful and that Khan’s vital signs were encouraging given the circumstances. The medical team has emphasised that the ventilator support was implemented as a precautionary measure to ensure effective respiratory support and facilitate recovery after the haemorrhage.

Salim Khan’s hospitalisation drew immediate attention not only from his family but from the wider Bollywood community. His son Salman Khan was seen at the hospital soon after the news of his father’s condition emerged, displaying visible concern. Other family members, including Arbaaz Khan, Sohail Khan, Alvira Agnihotri, and Salma Khan, were also present to offer support, reflecting the family’s close bond during challenging times.

Bollywood colleagues and friends have also rallied with messages of prayer and hope. Screenwriter Javed Akhtar, Khan’s former writing partner with whom he co-wrote many classics, visited the hospital to check on his condition. Actor Sanjay Dutt was also among the industry figures reported to have visited. These visits underscored the profound respect and affection the film fraternity holds for Salim Khan, whose contributions helped define an era of Hindi cinema.

Salim Khan’s legacy in Indian cinema is monumental. Alongside Javed Akhtar, he was part of the iconic duo Salim–Javed, credited with penning some of the biggest blockbusters in Bollywood history, including Sholay, Zanjeer, Deewaar, Trishul, Shakti and Mr. India. Their screenplays helped solidify the narrative style of mainstream Hindi films in the 1970s and 1980s, significantly influencing the genre’s direction and helping launch the “angry young man” persona associated with Amitabh Bachchan.

Now in his tenth decade of life, Khan’s current health crisis has rightly stirred an outpouring of concern across generations of fans and industry observers alike. While age naturally introduces complexities into recovery from medical events like haemorrhages, the latest updates suggest that his stabilisation and care are being conducted with utmost diligence by a specialised medical team.
