PM Narendra Modi Launches Development Projects Worth ₹18,680 Crore During Kolkata Rally

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a major public rally in Kolkata while inaugurating and laying the foundation stone for multiple development projects aimed at strengthening infrastructure and connectivity in the region. The projects, valued at approximately ₹18,680 crore, cover sectors such as highways, ports, railways and logistics infrastructure, marking one of the largest infrastructure pushes for the state in recent times.

The announcement was made during a large gathering at Brigade Parade Ground, where thousands of supporters and party workers attended the rally. The event also coincided with the conclusion of the BJP’s statewide “Parivartan Yatra,” which had travelled across different districts of West Bengal.

Infrastructure Push for Eastern India

The development projects launched during the visit focus on improving connectivity and boosting economic growth across West Bengal and neighbouring regions. According to official statements, a major portion of the investment will go towards expanding and upgrading national highways.

More than 420 kilometres of highway projects have been announced to enhance road connectivity across multiple districts of the state. These projects are expected to reduce travel time, improve freight transportation and strengthen regional trade networks.

One of the significant initiatives includes the foundation stone for several packages of the 231-kilometre Kharagpur–Moregram economic corridor, a four-lane highway that will connect several important districts including Paschim Medinipur, Bankura, Hooghly, Purba Bardhaman and Murshidabad. The corridor is expected to shorten travel distance by nearly 120 kilometres and significantly reduce travel time between key industrial areas.

Port and Shipping Infrastructure Development

Apart from road connectivity, several projects related to port infrastructure and maritime development were also launched. The Prime Minister inaugurated the mechanisation project at Berth No. 2 of the Haldia Dock Complex, which aims to increase cargo-handling capacity and improve operational efficiency.

Another important initiative involves the rejuvenation of the Khidderpore Dock area in Kolkata. This project is expected to modernise port infrastructure, strengthen logistics operations and enhance trade capacity for eastern India.

In addition, the foundation stone was laid for the mechanisation of Berth No. 5 at the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, which is anticipated to improve shipping operations and increase port productivity. These projects are part of a broader effort to strengthen India’s maritime infrastructure under national port development programs.

Railway and Transport Improvements

Railway infrastructure also received attention during the visit. Several stations are being redeveloped under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, an initiative aimed at modernising railway stations across the country.

The redevelopment of railway stations includes improvements such as upgraded passenger facilities, better accessibility, modern waiting areas and enhanced connectivity with urban transport networks.

The modernization of railway infrastructure is expected to boost regional mobility, encourage tourism and provide a more comfortable travel experience for passengers.

Economic and Regional Impact

Infrastructure development plays a crucial role in accelerating regional economic growth. Projects related to highways, ports and railways create employment opportunities during construction while also supporting long-term economic activity.

Improved road connectivity enables faster movement of goods and services, which benefits industries, agriculture and logistics sectors. Efficient ports and transport networks also help attract investment and strengthen international trade.

Experts believe that such infrastructure initiatives can significantly enhance West Bengal’s economic potential by improving connectivity with other states and boosting industrial development.

Political Significance of the Rally

The rally also carried political significance as it marked the culmination of the BJP’s “Parivartan Yatra,” a campaign aimed at reaching voters across the state ahead of upcoming elections.

Political analysts noted that large rallies and development announcements often serve as platforms for highlighting policy initiatives and showcasing governance achievements.

During the event, the Prime Minister addressed supporters and spoke about the importance of development-focused policies and infrastructure investment in driving economic progress.

Strengthening Connectivity in the Region

The projects announced during the visit form part of broader national initiatives to strengthen transportation infrastructure across India. Programs such as Bharatmala for highways and Sagarmala for port development aim to modernise the country’s logistics network.

By investing in large-scale infrastructure projects, the government aims to improve connectivity between urban centres, industrial zones and rural regions.

These improvements are expected to support economic growth, reduce transportation costs and create new opportunities for trade and industry.

Future Outlook

The infrastructure projects launched in West Bengal highlight the growing focus on regional connectivity and economic development in eastern India. As construction progresses over the coming years, these initiatives are expected to enhance transportation networks and support business growth in the region.

Large-scale investments in infrastructure remain a key driver of economic development, helping create jobs and improve productivity across multiple sectors.

For West Bengal, improved connectivity through highways, ports and railways could play an important role in strengthening its position as a major trade and logistics hub in eastern India.
