Today marks a historic milestone in India’s technological journey as Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the India AI Impact Summit 2026 at the iconic Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. The five-day event (February 16-20) positions India as a central hub for global AI governance and innovation. With the theme “Sarvajana Hitaya, Sarvajana Sukhaya” (Welfare for all, Happiness for all), the summit aims to ensure that Artificial Intelligence serves humanity in an inclusive and responsible manner.
Addressing the gathering, PM Modi emphasized that India’s AI transformation is powered by the strength of its 1.4 billion people and a robust digital public infrastructure. The summit is anchored on three foundational pillars or ‘Sutras’:
- People: Ensuring AI preserves dignity and inclusivity.
- Planet: Aligning innovation with environmental sustainability.
- Progress: Sharing AI benefits equitably across the globe.
These pillars further branch into seven ‘Chakras’ or working groups, focusing on critical areas such as AI skilling, social inclusion, health, agriculture, and safe & trusted AI.
The summit is witnessing unprecedented participation from over 100 countries, including 15-20 heads of government and 50+ international ministers. Global tech leaders, including Sundar Pichai (Google), Sam Altman (OpenAI), Jensen Huang (NVIDIA), and Satya Nadella (Microsoft), are expected to share their insights. The presence of these leaders underscores India’s rising stature as the “back-office of the world” turning into the “AI laboratory of the world.”
Alongside the summit, the India AI Impact Expo 2026 was launched, featuring over 850 exhibitors and 600 startups. The expo showcases population-scale solutions in healthcare, education, and agriculture. A major highlight is the government’s focus on “Sovereign AI”—building domestic computing infrastructure and democratizing AI resources so that they don’t remain concentrated in a few nations.
As the first major AI summit hosted in the Global South, India is advocating for a human-centric approach rather than just rigid regulation. The goal is to “leapfrog” traditional developmental pathways using AI’s multi-modal and multi-lingual capabilities. PM Modi also invited the world’s data to reside in India, pitching the nation as a secure and vibrant global hub for digital infrastructure.
The AI Impact Summit 2026 is not just a tech conference; it is a statement of India’s ambition and responsibility. By bringing together world leaders and innovators, India is charting a roadmap where AI is a tool for empowerment rather than displacement. As the summit progresses, the eyes of the world remain on New Delhi for the final “GPAI Council” outcomes on February 20.
