Emirati Women’s Day 2025: Hand in Hand, Celebrating 50 Years of UAE Women Empowerment

Dubai, August 28, 2025

As the United Arab Emirates commemorates the 10th Emirati Women’s Day today, the nation unites under the theme “Hand in Hand, We Celebrate 50 Years,” honoring five decades of remarkable progress in UAE women empowerment and gender equality. This milestone not only spotlights Emirati women achievements across governance, education, and the economy but also aligns with the UAE’s designation of 2025 as the “Year of Community,” emphasizing collective efforts in community development and societal advancement.
A Legacy Built on Visionary Leadership
The origins of Emirati Women’s Day trace back to 2015, when Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, revered as the “Mother of the Nation,” established the occasion to coincide with the founding of the General Women’s Union in 1975. Sheikha Fatima, wife of the UAE’s founder Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, has been a pivotal force in championing women’s roles, declaring that “the UAE has made gender equality an integral part of the nation’s social culture.” This year’s theme underscores unity, reflecting on how Emirati women have evolved from traditional roles to become key architects of national progress.

Over the past 50 years, the UAE has transformed into a global model for women empowerment. Equality between men and women was enshrined in the constitution in 2016, with equal pay for equal work mandated in 2021—the first major labor law overhaul in four decades.

Today, women constitute half of the UAE’s 40-member Federal National Council, following a 2018 directive, and hold 27 percent of ministerial positions. Her Excellency Sheikha Lubna Al Qasimi became the first woman to hold a cabinet post in 2004, setting a precedent for future generations.
Pioneering Achievements in Governance, Education, and Economy

In governance, Emirati women have shattered glass ceilings. The UAE ranks seventh globally and first regionally in the 2024 Gender Inequality Index by the United Nations Development Programme, a testament to its commitment to gender equality UAE.

Women now occupy influential roles, from diplomacy to defense. Major Mariam Al Mansoori, the UAE’s first female fighter pilot, exemplifies this, having pinned captain stripes on her sister Aisha Al Mansoori, who became the first Emirati female commercial airline captain in 2022.

Education has been a cornerstone of this empowerment. Emirati women lead in STEM fields, with initiatives like the National Strategy for Empowerment of Emirati Women, launched in 2015, fostering skills for future-ready careers.

In the economy, there are over 21,000 female entrepreneurs in the UAE, representing 21 percent of businesswomen across the Gulf Cooperation Council—the highest rate in the region.
