CCTV Footage, Diary Clues and 12-Hour Recovery: Inside the Gurugram Teen Suicide Case

A young life ended in tragic circumstances in Gurugram this week, prompting investigation and reflection on the pressures faced by India’s youth. Police in Bilaspur, Gurugram, recovered the body of a 16-year-old Class 11 student from a pond near the village cremation ground in Mokalwas, nearly three days after she was reported missing. The recovery followed a painstaking 12-hour operation that involved pumping out water and scouring a 15-foot deep pond for her remains.

According to police officials, the girl was last seen on CCTV footage late on the evening of February 11, leaving her home after dinner without informing family members. She was captured on camera wearing her school uniform, although her sudden departure left relatives puzzled and alarmed. A missing person report was filed, and her family offered a reward of ₹1 lakh for information that could lead to her location.

Investigators say that while searching her room, officers found a diary containing a chilling note. In the entry, she wrote, “Do not look for me. If you must, look near the cremation ground pond,” police said. Another passage in the diary asked her parents for forgiveness, with a reference to going to her grandfather. This note became a crucial lead, directing search teams toward the pond where her body was eventually found.

Responding to the tip, police, divers and local support teams gathered at the pond on Friday evening. It took nearly half a day to drain the water using multiple pumps. As the water level receded, her body was located stuck in the mud at the bottom. The deceased was wearing her school uniform at the time her body was recovered.

Senior police officials confirmed that the body was handed over to her family after an autopsy on Saturday under Section 193 of the Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), which governs investigations into unnatural deaths. Officers are still in the process of locating her mobile phone and reviewing additional CCTV footage to better understand the timeline of events leading up to her disappearance and death.

Locals described the incident as shocking and heartbreaking, noting that the student was considered bright and diligent in her studies. Her father works in a local court library, and she is survived by her parents and an elder brother. The case has drawn attention to concerns surrounding adolescent mental health, the pressures faced by academic students and the role of families and communities in providing support.

Mental health experts emphasize the importance of awareness and open communication when it comes to young people struggling with emotional distress. Specialists encourage families to engage with mental health professionals early and to be alert to signs of anxiety, depression or withdrawal. Support lines and counselling services remain available for those in need.

The Gurugram police continue to investigate the circumstances around the teenager’s death as part of efforts to piece together the events that preceded the tragedy. Authorities hope that further evidence, including digital data and witness statements, will provide clarity and lead to meaningful conclusions from this devastating case.
