Nagpur Startup Incentivizes Drivers To Obey Traffic Regulations

This new company, however, is attempting to complement this system of sanctions by adding prizes for motorists who go out of their way to obey the law. A pilot was started on West High Court Road in Nagpur in collaboration with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and the Nagpur Municipal Corporation after the company showed its startup at the 108th Indian Science Congress Exhibition.

The organisation made sure that the mapping equipment underwent thorough testing before being deployed at the various traffic signals. The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways is the organisation funding the starting project.

According to Nilesh Kolharkar of Social-Impact Innovations Pvt. Limited, “We have found that the majority of citizens respect the regulations. Usually, traffic violators are penalised. To honour and value such citizens, we created this system. Ten traffic signals are currently being installed on the West High Court between Laxmi Nagar and Seminary Hills, where the experimental project was started.

The new business uses RFID technology to operate the system.

Radio frequency identification (RFID) technology is used by the company, in case anyone is interested in how the rewards programme functions. On the test location, these gadgets have been installed on traffic lights. Additionally, the individual who has been connected to the app will receive a tag. The car will be given this tag.

Every time this vehicle passed a device connected to a traffic signal, the RFID would record that the driver had complied with the regulations of the road. The ‘Traffic Rewards’ app would automatically credit their account with 10 reward points if they did.

There are numerous domestic and foreign brands on the app. “We have partnered with over 80 national and international brands, including KFC, Pizza Hut, PVR, Radisson Blu, Pharmeasy, and others, where the reward points can be redeemed,” said Kolharkar. The users would receive special advantages. Instead of instilling a culture of fear of punishment, we aim to promote positivity. We have put the equipment through extensive testing for a very long time.

Online users had differing opinions about the concept. Some gushed, “I think it’s a fantastic concept as someone who fervently obeys the traffic signals! The city has terrible levels of traffic responsibility and awareness! This programme to recognise good citizens is fantastic. Some people expressed scepticism, saying “When something is free, you’re the product.”
