8th Convocation held at IIT Jodhpur Confers Over 500 Degrees To Graduating Students

In a first of its kind in India, joint bachelor’s degrees were awarded to as many as six students by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Jodhpur and AIIMS, Jodhpur in medical technologies, a stream introduced by the institute to explore high-end tech solutions to some complex issues in the healthcare sector.

The six graduates in the ‘Joint Program on Medical Technologies’ were among 516 students who were awarded degrees at IIT Jodhpur’s 8th convocation ceremony held on Saturday.

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Jodhpur, on November 12, celebrated its eighth Convocation. The Institute has awarded degrees to 516 graduating students.

IIT Jodhpur has awarded 16 PhD, 58 MBA, 101 MSc, 123 MTech, 212 BTech, and 6 degrees in the first-ever joint programme between IIT and AIIMS in the country, Master’s in Medical Technologies jointly awarded by AIIMS Jodhpur and IIT Jodhpur.

The Institute has awarded Devin Garg of Computer Science and Engineering stream with the President of India Gold Medal and Patel Jash Vinodbhai with Chairman, Board of Governors Gold Medal.

 Shubha Dhami of the Electrical Engineering stream has been awarded with Director’s Gold Medal. The Institute has also awarded Jagadish Chandra Bose Gold Medal and C V Raman Gold Medal.

This is the highest number of degrees that have been awarded to students in an academic year, said IIT Jodhpur director Prof Shantanu Chaudhary.

The highest 212 degrees were awarded to BTech students, followed by 123 in MTech, 101 in Master of Science, and 58 in Master of Business Administration (MBA). Sixteen candidates were awarded PhD in different streams.

Speaking on the occasion, director Prof Chaudhary said that graduating IITians must work to find innovative solutions to complex and long-pending problems in Indian society.

Presenting the Convocation Report, Professor Santanu Chaudhury, Director, IIT Jodhpur, said: “Aligned with the spirit of National Education Policy 2020, IIT Jodhpur is committed to offer a unique student focused educational experience which encourages collaborative and exploratory learning along with independent thinking.

 The Institute emphasizes science-based technology education with ample opportunities for the students to get engaged in solving real-life problems with interdisciplinary teams as part of curricular requirements.

We focus on the holistic development of students and have created strong internal systems for supporting diverse student cohorts in academic, industrial, and social domains both inside and outside the formal academic interactions of the classroom.”

“The courses offered by IIT Jodhpur also provide an opportunity for its students to pursue an Entrepreneur Path leading to science-based engineering innovations or convert their programme into a dual degree programme with specialization.”

This year IIT Jodhpur has introduced interdisciplinary programmes including MTech in robotics and mobility, MTech in augmented and virtual reality, intelligent communication systems, C PS and MS and digital forensic and cyber security, artificial intelligence and MS in digital forensic and cyber security and a new four-year VS program in chemistry and physics with specialisation.

Some newly introduced interdisciplinary programs at IIT Jodhpur this year include:

  • M Tech in Robotics and Mobility
  • M Tech in Augmented and Virtual Reality
  • M Tech in Intelligent Communication Systems
  • M Tech. in CPS and MS in Digital Forensics and Cybersecurity (with University of Albany)
  • M Tech in AI and MS in Digital Forensics and Cybersecurity (with University of Albany)
  • New four-year BS programs in Chemistry and Physics with specialization

IIT Jodhpur Director also shared key statistics from the Placement Season 2021 – 22 in his report:

  • 150+ companies participated in Internship and placement.
  • Total number of students placed – 344 (BTech – 172, Students, MTech- 88 Students, MSc- 29 student, MBA- 55)
  • BTech placement percentage – 97 per cent, MTech – 75 per cent, MSc -52 per cent, MBA- 100 per cent.

Kris Gopalakrishnan, chairman, Axilor Ventures, said that the high growth landscape of the Indian IT industry provides a wonderful opportunity for graduating students to make the country A supreme power in the information technology sector by replacing the United States in the next 30 years.

Former principal scientific advisor to the government of India, Professor R Chidambaram, said that research and entrepreneurship are the only way forward if we want to make India a leader in the global IT sphere.

Out of the total 561 graduating students, 391 were male and 125 were female.
