Paris 2024 Wheelchair Tennis Ace Oda: “Paris is a Special Place for Me”

Japan’s teenage sensation, Tokito Oda, is all set to make his Paralympic debut at Paris 2024, a city that holds deep significance for him. Oda, who began playing wheelchair tennis after being inspired by Shingo Kunieda, has a strong connection to Paris. Not only was he named after the iconic Arc de Triomphe, but he has also won two of his four Grand Slam titles at the French Open.

A Dream Born in Adversity

Oda’s journey into wheelchair tennis began after he was diagnosed with bone cancer at the age of nine. During his treatment, he watched Shingo Kunieda’s match at the London 2012 Paralympic Games, which ignited his passion for the sport. By the age of 14, Oda became the youngest ever boys’ world No. 1 in the junior wheelchair tennis rankings. His rise in the sport has been meteoric, earning him four Grand Slam titles and the title of world No. 1 in wheelchair tennis singles.

Paris: A Place of Inspiration

For Oda, Paris is not just a venue; it’s a place of inspiration. Ahead of the wheelchair tennis singles tournament at Paris 2024, Oda posted a photo on Instagram of himself making a wish in front of the Arc de Triomphe, a symbol that has always been special to him. On September 1, he advanced to the third round of the men’s singles tournament, continuing his unbeaten streak at Roland Garros.

“Coming back to Roland Garros is very special for me because I didn’t lose a match in the last two years at the French Open. I want to do it again,” Oda shared, expressing his desire to replicate his past success on the iconic red clay courts.

A Vision for the Future

Oda, who has been dubbed the successor to his idol Kunieda, hopes that his performance at Paris 2024 will inspire a new generation of wheelchair tennis players. He has already taken steps towards this by organizing a junior wheelchair tennis draw at an international tournament in his hometown.

“For me, the Paralympic Games are a huge opportunity not only to change my life but also to influence the lives of others who watch my matches. I want to show my tennis to many people and encourage kids to take up the sport,” Oda said.

Conclusion

As Tokito Oda prepares for Paris 2024, his story is one of inspiration, resilience, and the power of dreams. With Paris being a place of luck and meaning for him, Oda aims to make his mark on the world stage, just as he has done at the French Open.
