The National Law School of India University (NLSIU) has secured a significant grant from the JSW Group for the extensive redevelopment and expansion of its core Academic Block and Precinct. This grant will primarily focus on revamping the New Academic Block (NAB) situated in the southern area of NLSIU’s campus in Nagarabhavi, Bengaluru.
Originally constructed in 2014, the NLSIU’s New Academic Block comprises two floors housing lecture theatres, seminar rooms, office spaces, and meeting rooms. With the JSW grant, plans are underway to add four additional floors and refurbish the existing two floors. The objective is to create versatile and technologically advanced learning environments, along with collaborative research spaces for faculty, students, and researchers.
The revamped building will be renamed as the ‘JSW Academic Block,’ marking a significant milestone in NLSIU’s infrastructure enhancement efforts. Additionally, the grant will also establish a new research center on campus known as the ‘JSW Centre for the Future of Law.’ This center will spearhead academic and policy research, focusing on the impact of emerging technologies on the legal landscape, legal professions, and legal education.
The center’s mission includes developing innovative models of legal regulation, incubating technologies to facilitate legal system reforms, and enhancing access to justice. It will be led by a Center Director and will engage with various stakeholders such as governments, regulators, academia, civil society, and private sectors.
Expressing gratitude for this substantial grant, NLSIU’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof (Dr) Sudhir Krishnaswamy, highlighted its role in advancing the university’s Inclusion and Expansion Plan 2021-25. The plan aims to significantly increase student intake, promote social inclusivity, and create a conducive learning environment for future law professionals. This partnership with JSW reflects a shared commitment to fostering cutting-edge legal education and research responsive to contemporary technological shifts.
