IIT Madras professor honoured by International Construction Materials Body – Professor Ravindra Gettu of the Indian Institute of Technology Madras has been awarded the prestigious title of Honorary Member by the International Union of Laboratories and Experts in Construction Materials, Systems and Structures (RILEM). This recognition, the highest awarded by the organization, acknowledges his significant contributions to the field of construction materials research. Professor Gettu previously served as RILEM’s President from 2018 to 2021, becoming the first and only Asian to hold the position in its 78-year history.
In addition to his presidency, Professor Gettu also served as Vice President and Chair of the Technical Activities Committee of RILEM, an organization that unites researchers and experts on construction materials from across the globe. Currently, he holds the VS Raju Chair Professorship in the Department of Civil Engineering at IIT Madras and has played a pivotal role in advancing Fibre Reinforced Concrete (FRC) technology in India.
Expressing his gratitude for the honour, Professor Gettu said, “Pride, Enthusiasm, and Inclusivity – these three words describe my feelings about RILEM. I had the wonderful opportunity to lead the world’s most significant organization of researchers in construction materials, contributing to its global growth.”
He further added, “I’m proud to have led the transition to digital communication and virtual meetings during the pandemic, which expanded access for researchers worldwide, especially those unable to travel abroad, allowing them to voice their ideas and showcase their work.”
This recognition highlights IIT Madras’ growing global footprint in the field of construction materials research, with Professor Gettu at the forefront of technological advancements.
