IIM Ahmedabad to Implement Reservation in PhD Admissions Starting 2025

IIM Ahmedabad to Implement Reservation in PhD Admissions Starting 2025

The prestigious Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA) has officially announced that it will introduce reservations in its PhD admissions starting from the 2025 academic year. This move aligns with the Government of India guidelines for reservations, though the institute has yet to provide specific details on how the quota system will be applied.

The decision comes after IIMA informed the Gujarat High Court in 2022 about its intention to implement reservation policies for Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), Other Backward Classes (OBC), and persons with disabilities (PwD) in its doctoral programmes starting from 2025. This update follows a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed in 2021 by Anil Wagde, a member of the Global IIM Alumni Network, who argued that the lack of reservation in IIMA’s PhD admissions violated the constitutional provisions, the Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Admission) Act, and the University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines.

In its latest PhD admissions 2025 announcement, posted on IIMA’s website, the institute confirms that it will follow the Government of India reservation guidelines. A similar announcement was published in leading newspapers, reaffirming the new reservation policy for the doctoral programme.

Prospective applicants for the IIM Ahmedabad PhD programme must submit their applications by January 20, 2025, with interviews expected to take place between March and April 2025. This marks a significant change in the admission process at one of India’s top business schools, reflecting a broader move towards inclusivity and equal opportunity in higher education.
