Hamas Chief Ismail Haniyeh Killed in Iran; Israel Asserts Military Readiness

Hamas Chief Ismail Haniyeh Killed in Iran

Hamas Chief Ismail Haniyeh, along with one of his guards, was reportedly killed at his residence in Tehran, Iran. The Iran Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) confirmed the incident on Wednesday, stating that an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the attack.

“Early this morning, the residence of Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran was struck, resulting in his and one of his bodyguard’s martyrdom. The cause is under investigation and will be announced soon,” the IRGC stated. The announcement extended condolences to the Palestinian people, the Muslim world, and the fighters of the Resistance Front.

Hamas issued a statement attributing Haniyeh’s death to an airstrike on his Tehran residence, describing it as a “treacherous Zionist raid.”

Haniyeh had recently attended the inauguration ceremony of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and met with Iran’s Supreme Leader Seyyed Ali Khamenei. Khamenei shared photos of the meeting on X (formerly Twitter), which drew a response from the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF).

In their response, the IDF highlighted the meeting between Khamenei and leaders of Hamas and Islamic Jihad, organizations they accuse of attempting to kill Israelis. The IDF’s statement read: “Did someone ask for a photo-op of Iran and the leaders of their proxies? Iran’s Khamenei met with Hamas’ Ismail Haniyeh and the Islamic Jihad’s Ziyad-al-Nakhalah — two of the terrorist organizations who have been attempting to kill Israelis using weapons made and funded by Iran. We can only assume the topics of conversation included how to spend more Iranian money to kill Israelis while wishing Hezbollah’s Nasrallah could join them.”

In light of the incident, Israel has declared its military is “fully prepared for any scenario,” according to The New York Times. “We prefer to resolve hostilities without a wider war,” stated Israeli military spokesperson Daniel Hagari.

Earlier this year, Haniyeh’s three sons, Amir, Mohammad, and Hazem Haniyeh, were killed in an Israeli airstrike. Amir Haniyeh was a cell commander in the Hamas military wing, and both Mohammad and Hazem were also identified as Hamas operatives by the IDF.
