Reliance Begins Work on First of 500 CBG Plants in Andhra Pradesh

Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) has commenced construction of its first Compressed Bio-Gas (CBG) plant in Andhra Pradesh, marking the beginning of an ambitious project to establish 500 such facilities across the state. Andhra Pradesh IT & Electronics Minister and Chairman of the Group of Ministers on Job Creation, Nara Lokesh, laid the foundation stone for the plant at Kanigiri in Prakasam district.

The Kanigiri facility, being developed with an investment of Rs. 139 crores, is part of Reliance’s Rs. 65,000 crore initiative to build integrated CBG hubs in Andhra Pradesh. These projects will utilize Napier grass cultivated on barren and waste lands to produce bio-gas, creating new income opportunities for farmers through lease revenues and fixed-price contracts for the grass.

Reliance plans to develop 500,000 acres of land across Prakasam, Anantapur, Chittoor, and Kadapa for these plants. Once fully operational, the network will generate 40 lakh tonnes of CBG and 1.1 million metric tonnes of organic fertilizer annually, while creating 250,000 jobs for rural youth.

A Transformational Initiative

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Reliance Executive Director P M S Prasad highlighted the broader impact of the project.

“This is more than an energy initiative—it’s about transforming communities, supporting farmers, and driving Andhra Pradesh’s clean energy goals. With this, our ANNA DAATAS (food providers) will also become URJA DAATAS (energy providers). The byproduct of these plants will yield one crore tonnes of Fermented Organic Manure, helping reduce chemical fertilizer use and convert 15 lakh acres of barren land into fertile farmland.”

Minister Nara Lokesh emphasized the government’s commitment to fast-tracking approvals for projects that drive economic and environmental benefits.

“We are proud to support Reliance in launching this game-changing CBG initiative in record time. This is the first of many such projects, and we look forward to Reliance investing Rs. 65,000 crores in the state to develop 500 plants. Reliance has been one of AP’s largest and most trusted investors, and we are excited to expand this partnership into the bio-energy sector.”

Government and Industry Leaders in Attendance

The event saw participation from key government officials, including Energy Minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar, Chief Secretary Vijayanand, Prakasam District Collector Tamim Ansariya, Transco JMD Keerthi Chekuri, and several MLAs, MLCs, and senior Reliance officials.

Reliance’s Commitment to Clean Energy

Reliance Industries Limited, India’s largest private sector company, continues to expand its presence in renewable energy. With operations across multiple sectors—including hydrocarbon exploration, petrochemicals, digital services, and retail—the company ranks among the world’s top corporations and has been recognized in Fortune’s Global 500 and Forbes Global 2000 lists.

The CBG project in Andhra Pradesh marks a significant step in India’s transition towards sustainable energy solutions, while also driving rural employment, land revitalization, and agricultural sustainability.
