Seven Christian Medical College students suspended in ragging case

Seven senior MBBS students of the prestigious Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore were suspended by the college management after they subjected juniors to ragging after a video footage of first-year students being stripped, beaten and tortured went viral on social media.

The video, reportedly shot on October 9, shows the junior students being forced to walk around the campus in underwear as per the instructions of senior students.

CMC principal Dr Solomon Sathishkumar said Tuesday that the university has a “zero tolerance policy” towards ragging. A top source in the college said the anti-ragging committee was conducting a detailed Inquiry into the issue.

A junior student, who was subjected to the ragging, told the media persons at Vellore in Tamil Nadu that they were subjected to physical and sexual abuse.

A first-year MBBS student had shared the video in which he and other batch mates were subjected to ragging by seniors. The video, which went viral, depicted the juniors being made to kneel in the mud outside the college hostel and water sprayed from a hose on them.

The junior students were made to do some physical activity in the mud even as water was being sprayed on them.

The post of the first-year MBBS student was tweeted by a doctor and this went viral leading to the management taking action against the senior students.

Seven senior students were suspended from the college and the management has initiated a further probe into their activities.

A decision on taking criminal action against the seven suspended students through police is yet to be taken, according to a source familiar with the ongoing inquiry process.

“Before this, there were no such complaints. Even this complaint was submitted under anonymity. Even if junior students are hesitant to name specific students, we are moving forward with strict action because an institution like CMC, which has always been known for aptitude and selfless services in medical education, cannot afford to take a beating on its reputation,” said a college official.
